The importance of Cosplay Marketing

In 2026, influencer marketing has only gotten bigger and bigger. It feels like there’s very few businesses that don’t make the most of it nowadays. As TikTok continues to grow, the number of content creators continues to increase. But one particular niche that is gradually becoming more popular, is content creators in the cosplay community.

In this blog, I will discuss the benefits of cosplay marketing and how cosplayers are able to help your business grow. This should encourage you to work with me and my fellow creatives!

How can Cosplayers help your business?

As a cosplayer of over 8 years, I’ve had a number of experiences with businesses. I’ve been offered a variety of collaborations and deals. But what exactly can cosplayers offer your business?

Product Promotion

If you have physical products, you can send a selection of them to cosplayers. This way, cosplayers can film videos reviewing your product and generally making content with them. These videos will then be published onto social platforms by the cosplayer, in exchange for the gifted items and potentially money.

Location Visits

If your business is venue based, you can offer cosplayers free tickets to your location / event. The cosplayers can then film their experience and publish it onto their socials. If the cosplayers are quite far away from your location, it would be advised to provide money for travel and potentially accommodation.

Cosplay Appearances

Businesses who are promoting an upcoming video game, movie, etc, can commission cosplayers to create a costume based off it. They will then represent your upcoming project and interact with guests at your event. This should be paid through the cost of crafting materials, as well as their travel, accommodation and time at the event.

Comic Con Events

If you are running a Comic Con, you can invite cosplayers to be a special guest at the event. This can then be promoted on your socials, encouraging people to attend. At the Comic Con itself, cosplayers can then create content, feature in panels and host their own meet and greets. They can also judge or host cosplay competitions that may be taking place.

The Benefits of Cosplay Marketing

So, I’ve given you just some of the many ways cosplayers can help your business. But why choose a cosplayer for your marketing strategy?

Cost Effective

In some cases, particularly with gifted products and experiences, cosplay marketing can be a more affordable marketing tactic. Giving a few products away for free can be a benefit if the cosplayer manages to bring in lots of leads through their content.

Time Saving

Letting cosplayers do what they do best (content creation) means you can focus on other aspects of the business, that you may have previously struggled to find time for. A lot of cosplayers have a lot of skills under their belt. They can find it easy to make costumes, film content and edit it. They’re a one stop shop for content creation!

Stand out from the crowd

Having cosplayers promoting your business can make you shine so much brighter than other businesses. It shows your business is creative and inclusive. Cosplays tend to be bold and colourful, so seeing that on a video will easily grab your viewers’ attention.

How to Make Your Cosplays Stand Out

Are your cosplays being hidden amongst the rest? Are you unsure how to make your cosplays stand out from the crowd?

As a cosplayer who has a very distinct style, I thought I’d share my top tips on how to really grab people’s attention, both online and at comic cons.

Ditch the idea of being ‘canon’

As amazing as it is to absolutely nail a cosplay with all of the intricate details, it can become draining to hold yourself to such high standards all the time. We’ve all been there… when you go to a comic con with a missing accessory or prop. You feel deflated that you’re not 100% accurate, and get worried that it’ll be pointed out at the con.

Letting yourself be creative with a cosplay can be so refreshing. By adding your own personal touches, you’re making something that is truly yours. My Rumi cosplay is a good example of this. It’s got a very different art style to the actual Netflix film, but making it celshaded makes me stand out more. Read more on why I make celshaded cosplays.

There are tonnes of ways you can add a creative twist to your cosplays. Let me explain…

How to be Creative with your Cosplays

I think it’s pretty obvious to say that we’re all naturally creative people. But we also all have our own niches that we’re particularly good at. Why not tap into that with your costumes? Here’s some different ways you could be creative with it:

  • Crotchet your outfit
  • Add lots of accessories
  • Do dramatic / drag makeup
  • Make a paper / foam wig
  • Do a gothic / pastel version
  • Use your natural hair
  • ‘Genderbend’ the character

Plus many other creative ideas!

The Reality of Standing Out

When you start to tap into your own creative niche, you’ll find that people are more drawn to you. They’ll think “wow, I’ve never seen this character cosplayed like this before” and it’ll resonate with them. The more consistent you are with standing out, the more likely people will engage with your content and hit follow.

With all this being said, don’t be afraid to cosplay however you want! There’s no right or wrong answers. Whether you want a career out of this or you’re just doing it for fun, the most important thing is that you’re doing what you love.

Why do I make celshaded cosplays?

If you follow me on social media, you’ll know my main focus is celshaded cosplays. It’s the style I tend to stick to when it comes to cosplaying. But why do I only do celshaded cosplays nowadays? And what made me choose this distinctive style? Keep reading this blog post to find out!

My Celshaded Cosplay Origins

When I was a teenager, I became obsessed with a video game series called Borderlands. Borderlands is a first person shooter / RPG game that has a very distinctive style. This style is often referred to as celshading or a ‘hand drawn’ style.

Borderlands Cosplay Competition

Fast forward to 2019 (when I was 19), I decided to do my first ever Borderlands cosplay… a Psycho! This was only my third cosplay ever, so it’s safe to say I didn’t really know what I was doing. But despite that, I had a lot of fun attempting to imitate that Borderlands style.

That same year, I entered a Borderlands cosplay competition at MCM Manchester. I don’t know why I entered it (Who did I think I was?!) but I had an amazing experience. The cosplay competition allowed me to meet so many talented Borderlands cosplayers and I left feeling so inspired.

MORE Borderlands Cosplays!

Following the cosplay competition, I gradually started creating more and more Borderlands cosplays. From around 2019 to 2023, I created cosplays of Maya, Amara, Tiny Tina and Mad Moxxi. My Tiny Tina cosplay was particularly my pride and joy, with Amara being a close second. I became very fond of recreating the celshaded style for my cosplays.

Why do I only do celshaded cosplays now?

For about 7 years of my cosplay career, I did a mix of Borderlands cosplays and regular, uncelshaded cosplays from other franchises. In 2025, It clicked to me that celshaded is my specialty. At this current stage of my cosplay career, I can’t sew and I’m not great with wig styling (I have Drawiing Dreamer for that!). So I thought, why not lean into my skills and focus more on celshading?

This is when I officially decided to branch out and start celshading cosplays that aren’t specifically Borderlands characters or Telltale Games characters (a similar art style!). My first ever attempt at this was with my Jinx cosplay. This was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Jinx has now become one of my most popular cosplays ever. I believe people really enjoy that combined Arcane and Borderlands art style.

Since then, I’ve created a huge range of cosplays from various franchises, all in my signature celshaded style.

Finding your own cosplay style

If you’re desperate to grow your cosplay social media channels, I’d highly recommend finding what makes you unique and focusing on that! Although canon cosplays have always been typically seen as ‘superior’, this can sometimes make it easier to get lost in the crowd.

Say there’s a sea of Hatsune Miku cosplayers all trying to look identical to the Vocaloid… If you decide to add loads of cute accessories to your wig, do really dramatic makeup, crotchet her entire costume, add loads of sparkles, this is more likely to make you stand out from the crowd! Your cosplay will make users online stop and watch.

Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd and really make your cosplays your own! I promise you’ll see more benefits from doing this. Doing this with my celshaded cosplays has truly been life changing!
